What's a speedbike? - Definition
But then, what exactly is a speedbike?
The speedbike is a two-wheeled electric bike that is faster and more powerful than traditional e-bikes. Unlike the latter, the speedbike falls into the category of 50 cc mopeds. Indeed, a speedbike can go up to 45 km/h at the motor assistance level, compared to 25 km/h for traditional e-bikes. The motor power is also not limited to 250W. For example, the LMX 56 can go up to 2500W.
Why choose a speed bike rather than an e-bike?
Speed bike: lighter than a scooter or moped
If you take the LMX 56 and its featherweight of 30 kg, a speedbike is 3 to 5 times lighter than a classic moped.
The handling is then made easy and accessible to all and its handling allows you to find the driving sensations and speed of an enduro mountain bike, while developing the performance of an electric motorcycle.
Accessible to all
The speedbike is part of the 50cc mopeds category (L1e-B). Thus,
no license is required, just the BSR which is accessible from the age of 14.
In addition, the speedbike is easy to transport because it can be quickly loaded onto a bike rack (no need for a trailer).
Discreet and silent
The absence of engine noise and vibrations allows you to concentrate on trajectories, improvisation and fun, without disturbing the neighborhood.
Goodbye to noise pollution and carbon emissions.
No more frustration at 25 km/h
Now you can have fun up to 45 km/h. On the LMX 56, the 2500W of peak engine power is a treat.
LMX TIP: The LMX 56 has double electric assistance because it has a rotating handlebar grip. Ideal for making the most of all its power.
Limited maintenance compared to a scooter
Maintenance is made easy, simple and limited (washing, greasing, and tires). It is similar to that of a classic VAE. The operating costs are therefore reduced.
Practice in urban environment
Easy to transport and park, the speedbike is perfect for getting around town efficiently, while having fun. It is safer than a simple bike on a road because there is almost no speed difference with cars. Exposure to danger is then reduced. It is also less bulky than a scooter. It is also perfect for having fun on weekends off-road.
Speed bike legislation in France
The speed bike falls into the L1e-B moped category (scooters, mopeds, and other mopeds under 50 cc).
Here are the essential points to respect when using a speed bike:
- Take out civil liability insurance.
- Wear a moped-approved helmet. A simple bicycle helmet is not allowed.
- Wear moped-approved gloves.
- The speedbike is accessible from the age of 14 and requires an AM license (formerly the BSR).
- The speedbike must have a registration document and a registration plate.
- With a speedbike, you cannot use cycle paths and “green” tracks unless otherwise indicated (mopeds authorized).
- A few parts are also necessary on the LMX in addition to the plate (mirror, rear brake light, front lighting, kickstand, horn and reflectors).
