Being a shepherd in the high mountains with an LMX 56: Paul’s story

Being a shepherd in the high mountains with an LMX 56 : Paul's story

Fourth episode of our Success Stories series.

Dive into the heart of the LMX universe and discover passionate people who bring the brand to life through their exceptional adventures. This report is available in video, directly on our YouTube channel.

In this article

For our 4th Success Story, we met Paul Blanc, a shepherd in Bonneval-sur-Arc near Val d’Isère, to explore his extraordinary daily life.

Paul is one of the very first to use his LMX speed bike as a true utility vehicle, helping him monitor his flock of 80 sheeps and 100 lambs.

Living Among the Peaks

Paul lives and works in Bonneval-sur-Arc, a village located at the end of the Maurienne Valley in the Vanoise National Park, one of the most beautiful places in France, nestled in a stunning valley and surrounded by majestic mountains.

Every day, he balances his duties as both a shepherd and a farmer, a demanding job that requires constant vigilance and great mobility.

Summers are especially busy, with the need to monitor his flock, manage haymaking, and handle various agricultural tasks necessary to keep his land in good condition.

Paul is also responsible for ensuring the health and safety of his sheeps.

Not only do the frequent movements between different pastures require constant presence, but the care of the animals also demands the ability to react quickly in case of any issues.

The Impact of LMX Speed Bikes on His Daily Life

The arrival of the LMX 64 and LMX 56 has transformed Paul’s daily life.

Designed to handle challenging terrain, these bikes offer him exceptional mobility.

Where steep paths and rugged slopes once made traveling on foot or by traditional vehicles difficult, the LMX 56 speed bike now allows Paul to move quickly and efficiently.

With his speed bike, Paul can carry all the equipment he needs for his work.

He can transport heavy loads, up to 25-30 kg on his back, whether it’s tools for repairing fences, medical supplies for the animals, or food for his livestock.

This transport capacity is particularly valuable, as it frees him from logistical constraints.

Riding the LMX 56: Enhanced Vigilance Against Predators

The growing presence of predators in the region adds another layer of complexity to Paul’s work.

To protect his flock of sheep, he must be able to respond quickly to any threat. The LMX 56 gives him the advantage of close monitoring and rapid intervention, increasing the safety of his ewes and lambs.

Thanks to the LMX bikes’ range and durability, Paul can cover large distances without worrying about battery life.

Whether it’s for regular patrols or emergency interventions, the LMX provides him with the flexibility needed to effectively meet the challenges posed by nature and predators.

LMX Bikes: A Long-Term Partnership and Collaboration

“I came across this bike brand at the Val d’Isère Electric Show. I tried it out and thought: why not get back on a bike where I can pedal and accelerate? One with large wheels that can handle small ditches and clumps of dirt. […] I’m thrilled with it, and I haven’t looked back since.”

Hugues, the passionate shepherd from Avène (France)

It is in the heart of the Parc du Haut-Languedoc, in the region of the Hérault in the south of France, that we met Hugues.

Hugues is a passionate shepherd working in the GAEC Des Monts et Des Sources (farm).

Over more than 300 hectares, he manages an impressive flock of 180 ewes, accompanied by around sixty goats. He also practices free-range breeding of pigs and cows.

For the past few years, Hugues has turned to a new means of transportation to move around his farm…

Hugues et ses ânes

In search of new forms of mobility

About 10 years ago, Hugues faced serious health problems. Walking became increasingly difficult for him. Health professionals advised him to quit his activity to preserve his health.

A career change wasn’t a possibility for Hugues, who wanted to continue his shepherd job.

He set out to find solutions to move around his farm without exhausting himself, despite his health issues.

Hugues tried out various modes of transportation, lighter and smaller than a car. He turned to thermal vehicles, such as quad.

However, the thermal quad did not suit him. The noise of the engine frightened the animals, in addition to the smell and heat emitted.

After some research, Hugues discovered on internet a clean and silent alternative to these thermal vehicles: the LMX 161 ultra-light electric motorcycle. After discussing with the LMX Bikes team, he decided to take the plunge.

How has the electric motorcycle revolutionized his mobility?

Hugues embarks on the electric adventure. A small revolution in the shepherd’s daily life.

The electric motorcycle LMX 161 allows him great mobility in his farm, even on the most difficult field.

Accompanying the animals to the field, monitoring the condition of the fences, making round trips between the farm and the herd, bringing back a tool from the shed… All these movements are part of the shepherd’s daily routine, which, when done on an electric motorcycle, become more enjoyable.

In addition to saving time and energy, Hugues has noticed a reduction in stress among his animals.

With over 3,000 kilometers on the counter, Hugues proves every day that electric two-wheelers can revolutionize several outdoor professions, such as that of a shepherd or farmer.

It’s an inspiring testimony that we invite you to discover without further delay on our YouTube channel.

Retranscription video

My name is Hugues, we are in the Haut-Languedoc Park, in the Hérault region. We work on 300 hectares. We have 180 sheep, about sixty goats, and we raise free-range pigs. Ten years ago, I faced health problems, I had arthritis, I could hardly walk.

When I went to see the rheumatologist, he told me that I would have to change jobs, it was not possible!

I found an electric bike solution on the internet. Because we had tried a quad, but the quad smokes, it makes noise, even when waiting for the animals, it pollutes, it’s noisy, it’s unpleasant. It overheats when going uphill.

I found the idea interesting, and then I contacted them, I went to see them, and from there I tried one and bought an LMX. It really met all my needs because at the time, I could hardly walk.

So I would take the animals out with the bike, sometimes I would act as a shepherd with the bike when maneuvers were delicate with the animals.

From there, it’s easier to keep track of your plots, to find animals when they get lost. It’s quite easy to go back over the route we’ve taken during the day, to see if we haven’t lost any animals along the way.

If they are not able to return on their own, we bring them back in a 4×4, but we had already spotted them on the LMX. So we save time, we save energy because we don’t strain ourselves.

And it’s very suitable because on slopes we go very slowly, we wait for the herd, our feet touch the ground well which means we have a good grip, we don’t get tired, and at the same time if we want we can go very fast with the bike.

The Domaine de l'Hortus: a family history at the heart of Pic Saint-Loup

Nestled between Hortus cliff and the Pic Saint-Loup, the Domaine de l’Hortus is a vineyard established in the 1970’s by the Orliac family.

We had the opportunity to meet François Orliac, one of the sons, who works on the family project with his brothers.

The estate has embraced organic, sustainable, and modest agriculture as its tradmark. This choice reflects an understanding of the soils and climates of the estate. The vineyard’s layout allows the operation to fully adapt to the natural environment of the valley.

This intention is also reflected in the development of integrated architecture on the estate.

falaise de l'Hortus

The arrival of the LMX 56 speed bike within the vineyard

To continue preserving the natural environment of the vineyard, the Orliac family explored alternatives to cars for executing daily tasks.

It was at this moment that François heard about LMX Bikes and its high-performance speed bikes. Consequently, two LMX 56 bikes joined the farm in 2023.

“With this ebike, it becomes a moment of pleasure.”

In the vast territory of l’Hortus, spread over 80 hectares of vineyards and 215 hectares of woods, the LMX 56 has proven to be a true utility vehicle.

Moving to open an irrigation valve in a distant plot, monitoring the condition of the vines, going back to take a tool… These are all operational tasks that are now carried out on the speed bike. No need to take out the car anymore; the LMX 56 emerges as the ideal solution for saving time.

It also offers a more playful and sporty approach to conveyance. Using a speed pedelec provides a sense of freedom and adventure, far from the routine of driving a car.

Domaine de l'hortus

Transcription of the interview

Hello, my name is François Orliac, I am one of the members of the family that owns the Hortus estate. We are about fifteen kilometers north of Montpellier, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

Our activity: we operate a vineyard on about a hundred hectares, amidst this landscape, between the Hortus cliff and the Pic Saint-Loup.

All our vineyards are on this site, and we also operate 215 hectares of woods.

My relationship with LMX: it’s Nicolas Wertans who said to me: ‘You always move around by car, it makes a dreadful noise, you don’t enjoy it…’ and he was absolutely right! And he introduced me to his ebike.

So this bike, it’s absolutely fantastic. Since then, indeed, I no longer take the car, and especially I’ve transformed something tedious, which was in the evening after work, after the administrative office, etc. I had to go to the estate, check, to know where the teams were at, turn 4 valves concerning irrigation.

So, I also did that on weekends and it’s true that it was painful because I always had to leave home, go to the estate, take a car. It was noisy, it was hell.

Thanks to this bike, it becomes a moment of pleasure. It’s absolutely wonderful.

The LMX 56 speed bike as a true utility vehicle

The LMX 56 is not just a fun vehicle; it can also serve as an efficient means of conveyance, thus playing a role as a utility vehicle for daily activities.

At the Domaine de l’Hortus, it’s the speed of movement, agility, and autonomy that convinced us.

Equipped with a luggage rack and storage bags, there’s no need to carry a backpack anymore: equipment can be directly placed at the back of the speed bike.

Its side stand allows for stabilizing it anywhere for quick interventions.

Its maneuverability allows for easy navigation between rows of vines, while its discreet nature helps preserve the tranquility of the vineyard.

You have a similar use as François Orliac?

The LMX 56 adapts to your needs thanks to its high level of customization.

LCV Cycles : from competition to selling LMX speed bikes

LCV Cycles : From Competition to Become a LMX dealer

In this article

At the end of 2023, the LMX team visited Loïc Veyrac in Haute-Loire, at his store LCV Cycles.

Loïc has been familiar with LMX Bikes for several years. Initially a rider in one of our photoshoot, he later competed for the brand in the LX Cup and FIM Ex-bike World Cup. In 2023, he realized a significant project: opening his own bike store and offering the LMX 56 for sale.

The interview is available on our YouTube channel (link below).

This video marks the first episode of a new series: the Success Stories. This format takes you into the heart of the LMX universe, introducing enthusiasts who bring the brand to life through their exceptional adventures.

In this interview, Loïc reflects on his relationship with two-wheelers, his experience as an LMX rider in motorcycle and e-bike competitions, and the opening of his LCV Cycles shop in Aurec-sur-Loire.

Motorcycle and bicycle : A passion growing Since a Young age

Loïc Veyrac is a passionate soul. Originally from Haute-Loire, he started pedaling at the age of 2. A year later, he climbed onto a motorcycle for the first time. This passion for two-wheelers is a family affair, as his parents are also fervent enthusiasts. Every evening after school, he would practice on the motorcycle/bicycle track built by his parents.

A few years later, he joined a trial bike club. Around the age of 10, he participated in his first competition. Trial biking is a sport where the bike and its rider become one. The bikes are very lightweight and do not have a saddle. In this discipline, the cyclist must overcome obstacles without touching the ground, requiring skill, balance, and technique.

Loïc entered trial biking competitions to assess his own skill level. And he got hooked. Competing allowed him to progress further, providing valuable experience in his trial biking practice.

Loïc discovered the world of motorcycles through his parents, who immersed him in this universe from a very young age. Alongside his passion for trial biking, he also engaged in motocross with friends and family. It wasn’t until around the age of 17 that he truly entered motorcycle competitions. What attracted Loïc the most were the extreme motocross competitions (Alestrem), focused on trail riding: steep climbs, dizzying descents, technical sections, and natural obstacles.

He started winning numerous prizes in various competitions. These prizes motivated him to continue and excel in his practice.

LCV Cycles : opening his own shop in Haute-Loire, France

The idea of opening a bike shop began taking shape in Loïc’s mind two years ago. Due to the Covid pandemic, he had to delay his project. In 2023, an opportunity to secure a space arises, and he decides to embark on the adventure.

He chooses to set up in his hometown, where his passion has grown: Aurec-sur-Loire. This location choice also addresses a local need, as the area lacked bike stores.

After several months of construction, Loïc officially opens his shop in early June.

Located just 20 minutes from Saint-Étienne in France, LCV Cycles offers the sale of new and used bikes, accessories, repairs, and electric bike rentals. The store provides a wide range of bikes : road, gravel, off-road, speedbikes, children’s bikes, electric bikes, traditional bikes, and more. This diversity allows LCV Cycles to make its products accessible to a wide range of enthusiasts.

His connection with LMX Bikes : from rider to dealer

It’s been almost 4 years since Loïc discovered LMX Bikes.

The meet took place during a photoshoot for the LMX 64. The team was looking for a rider and contacted Loïc thanks to his experience and background.

The photoshoot took place at La Jasserie (Parc du Pilat in France). It was the perfect opportunity for Loïc to experience the sensations and performance of the LMX 64 for the first time. The dual-assist system (throttle and pedaling), dual transmission, and the power of the LMX 64 were a real revelation.

Testing the LMX 64 in real conditions, in a wild terrain, is what appeals to Loïc. He rediscovers the sensations of both biking and motorcycling, all on a lightweight and maneuverable vehicle.

In 2022, he becomes an LMX rider in the LX Tour championship, the first French event for 100% electric motorcycles. Loïc then rides the LMX 161 MXR, LMX’s ultra-light electric motorcycle.

This competition allows the team to improve the product based on Loïc’s feedback throughout the championship stages. For our rider, it’s also an opportunity to explore the MXR :

“A lightweight motorcycle that might look like a bicycle but is still a motorcycle… I discovered even more about LMX.”

In 2023, Loïc trades the powerful and lightweight LMX 161 MXR for the brand’s new speedbike model : the LMX 56. He participates in the Ex-Bike World Cup organized by the FIM (Motorcycling International Federation) and discovers this new platform, even more adaptable and entertaining. Similar to the LX Tour, this competition is an opportunity to advance the ultra bike, which evolves in extreme and challenging riding conditions.

This experience enables Loïc to take part in competitions abroad, particularly in Belgium, Germany, and Italy. It’s also a chance for him to explore new terrains, meet new competitors, and observe the range of models in the race.

“E-bikes are brand new, and they are making their way into competitions, especially at the global level. It’s really cool to be able to introduce the product and, at the same time, promote the sport. It’s truly enjoyable!”

“Ridding with LMX made me want to sell it!”

Based on this experience, Loïc decides to include the LMX 56 in the product range of his store, LCV Cycles, and so become an authorized LMX dealer in Haute-Loire. This region is indeed conducive to off-road use, bringing joy to mountain biking and enduro enthusiasts for years. “It’s the perfect bike around here!” testifies Loïc.

Buy a Speed Bike : Everything You Need to Know About Government Bonus

Aide velo électrique

Buy a Speed Bike: Everything You Need to Know About the French Government bonus

In this article:

Speed bikes are electric vehicles eligible for purchase subsidies.

Are you eager to acquire a 45 km/h speed bike? What government subsidies are available?

In this article, we explain how state aids work for the purchase of a speed bike.

What is a Speed Bike?

A speed bike is an electrically assisted vehicle capable of reaching speeds higher than traditional electric bikes. Electric bikes are limited to 25 km/h of assistance, while speed bikes can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h.

In terms of the nominal power of the motor, electric bikes are limited to 250W, whereas speed bikes are allowed to exceed this limit and can reach up to 2000W.

Legally, a speed bike is classified as a 50cc moped in Europe. Its power and top speed place it in the L1e-B category.

Due to its classification, the use of a speed bike is not permitted on bike paths, and wearing an approved helmet is mandatory.

Aide velo électrique

These ebikes are loved by offroad enthusiasts for their thrill-seeking capabilities. But they also serve as ideal partners for urban and suburban commuting during the week.

For more information, visit our dedicated article.

Speed Bike purchase: What Assistance Can You Benefit From?

The french government encourages the acquisition of electric vehicles. When purchasing an approved speed bike, you can benefit from an ecological bonus.

In 2023, the amount of the assistance is €250 per kWh for vehicles with a net maximum power exceeding 2 kW.

Let’s take the example of the LMX 56H.

The LMX 56 has a motor power of 2.5 kW and a battery capacity of 1000 Wh. Therefore, you should go to the 50cc moped category.

The homologated version falls into the “Power of 2 kilowatts or more” category (EU Regulation 168/2013).

French government’s assistance for the purchase of an approved LMX 56 is therefore €250.

The amount of this assistance may vary, but it is renewed by the government from year to year.

You may also be eligible for assistance based on your region, department, and city of residence. Inquire with your local authority for more information on the offered grants.

Speed Bike purchase: What are the Conditions to Benefit from the bonus?

aide velo électrique

To be eligible for this government assistance, you must respect several conditions when purchasing your speed bike:

  • Be of legal age and reside in France.
  • Use electricity as the energy source.
  • Not use a lead-acid battery.
  • Purchase a new vehicle.
  • Purchase a vehicle registered in France in a definitive series.
  • Not sell the vehicle during the first year of registration.

The application for assistance must be submitted no later than 6 months from the invoicing date of your speed bike.

LMX 56H: Why Choose This Speed Bike?

The LMX 56 is a powerful speedbike capable of reaching a speed of 45 km/h, unlike the 25 km/h limit of conventional electric bikes.

In addition to having pedal assistance, the LMX 56 features a throttle. This unique dual-assistance system allows you to surpass yourself during your rides and overcome all obstacles. It enables you to cover longer distances and at a higher speed than a conventional e bike.

One of the greatest assets of this ultra bike is its versatility.

It is the ideal partner for your sporty and off-road outings on weekends, but it can also accompany you in your daily commutes in the city.

aide vélo electrique
Aide velo electrique

The LMX 56 is a street legal vehicle, authorized to operate in urban areas and on public roads. Since its introduction to the market, the LMX 56 is available in both homologated and non-homologated (offroad) versions.

The homologated version allows legal use on public roads in Europe.

To obtain this certification, the LMX 56 meets specific criteria, particularly in terms of safety and performance. It is equipped with a license plate and plate holder, front and rear lights, reflectors, a left mirror, a horn, and a stand.

Upon delivery, we provide you with its European conformity certificate. This document confirms that your ultra bike complies with current standards.

Finally, it is the owner’s responsibility to complete the necessary procedures to obtain a registration certificate, subscribe to insurance, and apply for government assistance.

How LMX Supports You in Your Procedures?

The LMX team can assist you with the procedures after the purchase of your LMX 56.

Vehicle Registration: We offer a service to handle the process of obtaining your vehicle registration on your behalf.

Insurance: We also assist you in finding an insurance provider, ensuring you can ride safely with your new speed bike.

A new 3D configurator for the LMX 56

Configurator LMX-56 speed bike

A new 3D configurator for the LMX 56

In this article

After several months of work, the LMX team is proud to present the new online configuration tool dedicated to the LMX 56 speedbike.

Find all the new features in this article.

An ultimate personalization experience around the LMX 56

Since the beginning, we manufacture our models to order, offering our customers the choice of the configuration of their speed bike. Color, version, spare parts, everything is subject to customization.

Directly online or with the advice of our team, everyone has the opportunity to create the ultimate speed bike adapted to their practice and their needs.
A first configurator had already been present on our site for several years. But the development of the latest model prompted us to think about a new interface, more user-friendly and intuitive. We worked alongside the design agency L’Agence Pigment, which specializes in Mobility.

3D display, a new way to discover the range

The configurator displays the LMX 56 in 2D, right profile view, in an ultra-realistic way. But the great novelty lies in the visualization of the chassis in 3D, for an even more complete immersion. The “Show 3D viewer” button allows you to switch from 2D view to 3D view in a fraction of a second.

This three-dimensional functionality allows you to really appreciate the geometry and proportions of the speed bike once mounted. Thanks to the different views, explore and visualize in real time the different possible configurations with great fluidity.

Two new designs to discover on the configurator

And as something new never comes alone, we are unveiling the latest colors of the LMX 56 in addition to the configurator.

The 3D display of the configurator is the ideal tool to discover these new liveries in their smallest details. This ultra-realistic approach allows you to see the final look of your speedbike once assembled.

Copper green

Designed for adventurous spirits, this intense and assumed design refers to the extreme outdoor performance and solidity of the LMX 56.

Oyster White

In a more urban universe, this design combines technical performance, innovation, dynamism and agility.

The new equipment of the LMX 56 for a tailor-made speed bike

The configurator offers a wide range of customization options, ranging from frame size to numerous peripherals and accessories.
This choice offers total flexibility for the user, who can select equipment from different levels of the range and more suited to his practice.

Find here the premium equipment available on the LMX 56:

  • FOX full suspension
    • FOX 38 Kashima Float Factory fork, 170 mm travel
    • Fox DHX shock, 160mm travel
      Wireless
  • Peripherals premium Pack
    • SRAM AXS GX Eagle derailleur
    • Rockshox Reverb AXS dropper post
  • Schwalbe Eddy Current Tube Type or Tubeles Tires
  • Velo Ultimate high-end saddle
  • Quadlock Phone Holder

The “Download my configuration” button allows you to save the chosen configuration in PDF format. A visual of the LMX 56 speed bike is included in the file. The different options selected and their prices are also displayed.

You can thus save several configurations with different range levels. Thus, you can take the time to choose your preferred configuration from the downloaded PDFs.

It's up to you now!

The LMX 56 speedbike configurator is now available on the site. It’s up to you to test this new tool and give free rein to your imagination. See you soon at LMX!

Which helmet to choose for your speedbike?

Which helmet to choose for your speedbike ?

In this article

Have you just fallen for an LMX ?
Are you still at the thinking stage ?

To ride our speed bikes safely, you must wear a special helmet. It is important to know the standards to choose your helmet well. There are different types of helmets adapted to each practice and each morphology.

To be safe on your speed bike or motorcycle, this article will help you choose the right helmet.

The speed bike, what is it ?

A speedbike is a fast electric bicycle. Speedbikes go faster than conventional e-bikes thanks to electric assistance up to 45 km/h. The assistance is active when the rider pedals or when he turns the accelerator on the handlebars. This makes it possible to cover distances faster and easier, on different types of terrain.

Speed bikes are subject to specific regulations in each country or region. Rules may change for engine strength, top speed, driver age and helmet wearing. It is important to familiarize yourself with local regulations for safe use of a speedbike.

Casque Speed Bike

In France, speed bikes are considered 50cc mopeds. These vehicles are homologated for the road and are classified in the L1e-B category.

To be homologated, the speed bike must meet specific criteria, particularly in terms of safety and performance. The Highway Code sets rules for cars driving in France. You have to follow them to have the right to travel on the roads.

Ride your speed bike legally

It is important to note that speed bikes are not allowed on cycle paths in France. They must be used on the road, like other motorized vehicles.

It is also important to respect speed limits and drive responsibly.

Pilots are required to take out civil liability insurance.

Wearing a helmet on a speed bike

Wearing a helmet is compulsory on speed bikes.

To ride legally, your helmet must be ECE 22-05 approved. This is a moped and motorcycle helmet.

It is important to take into account this standard, currently in force in France.

You can buy “special speedbike” helmets on the market. However, they comply with the NTA8776 standard. This standard is only valid in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In addition to helmets, there are other requirements to be able to ride a speedbike.

  • The obligation to wear approved moped gloves
  • The AM license (formerly BSR)
  • A gray card and a license plate
  • Special equipment on the speed bike: a mirror, a brake light, front/rear lighting and a kickstand

Choosing the right speed bike helmet for your use

The factors for choosing an adult electric motocross helmet are the same as for other types of helmets. To ensure your safety and comfort, it is important to take into account several elements.

First, you need to make sure the helmet fits snugly and is comfortable to wear. You should also check that the helmet complies with current safety standards.

Check that the helmet is ventilated and adjustable so that it stays in place. Finally, you need to make sure that the headset is lightweight and made from sturdy and durable materials.

Which speed bike helmet for you ?

Depending on your use, there are different types of helmets. There are helmets designed for urban, some for enduro or trial outings. An urban type helmet will have a rather round shape. A trials type helmet will have a visor or sun visor, with a sportier shape with vents.

How to choose the size of your helmet ?

Choose a helmet that fits your head properly. The size must be adapted to your head circumference. The helmet must be well positioned in order to offer optimal protection. Try several models and brands to find the one that best suits your body type.

Choosing a comfortable speed bike helmet

Make sure the headset is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The strap and interior padding adjustment systems can play an important role in the overall comfort of the helmet.

A HELMET SUITABLE FOR NIGHT USE

When riding in the dark or with little light, it is important to take steps to be visible. One of the best ways to do this is to use a helmet with reflective or integrated parts. This will improve your visibility to other road and trail users, which can help you avoid accidents. Wear a reflective or integrated helmet to be more visible and ride safely, even in the dark.

Consult the opinions of other users of speed bike helmets

Reading user reviews can also be a good solution for choosing your headphones. This can be very helpful in making a decision, especially when it comes to size.

Need speedbike helmet help ? Ask for professional advice in a specialist store. They can help you choose the right helmet for your riding style and needs.

In summary. Choose an approved helmet to ride safely on your LMX. It is important to take the time to choose the right helmet, as it is essential for your safety and comfort.

Be sure to check that the helmet fits your head properly. Also check that the helmet fits properly and is comfortable to wear. Once you’ve found the right helmet, you can finally enjoy your LMX safely !

BULTACO, LMX BIKES : the first electric bikes/motorcycles

In this article

Motorbike sport - New sporting practices that are developing

Bultaco

The use of electric motorcycles has increased considerably over the past 10 years. This trend is particularly visible in the field of off-road sports like enduro, cross and trial.

The practice of thermal motocross has evolved. Noise pollution and carbon emissions are less and less tolerated by the neighborhood. Playgrounds are increasingly limited for riders.

Electric motorcycles then began to appear on the roads. Silent, emission-free and without constraints, they are seen as an alternative that is more respectful of nature and the people.

Electric motorcycles have therefore become an interesting alternative for off-road enthusiasts. They allow motorcyclists to practice their favorite sports without causing any nuisance while respecting the surrounding nature.

New models are emerging, including ultra-light electric motocross bikes specially designed for off-road practices. They offer impressive performance in the field. Their responsiveness makes practice more fun and accessible for pilots.

You got it : the LMX project has been driven from the start by a vision of an electric future for motorsport.

Electric motocross - The appearance of new platforms on the market (Bultaco Brinco, LMX)

BULTACO, HISTORIC MANUFACTURER

Along with the development of these new practices, several models have appeared on the market. Historical manufacturers like Bultaco, a Spanish brand, have developed models of electric motorcycles suitable for enduro or off-road riding.

There are new machines and the Bultaco Brinco is one of them. It’s a two-wheeler halfway between an electric mountain bike and a 50cc motorcycle. It was launched in 2016.

1.3 kWh battery, motor performance up to 3 kW peak, the Bultaco Brinco said it offered a unique driving experience.

The Brinco could move thanks to a dual assistance system. It included a handlebar throttle grip and a traditional bicycle crankset. The advertised maximum assistance speed was 60 km/h.

Bultaco

2018 : Stop production of BULTACO BRINCO motorcycles

This hybrid electric vehicle was intriguing. Bicycle and motocross enthusiasts were challenged. New practitioners were curious to test these more accessible machines than conventional thermal motorcycles.

For several reasons, the brand ended the production of Bultaco Brinco motorcycles in 2018.

LMX Bikes and the LMX 161, the French ultra-light electric motorcycle

moto bultaco

We had already been working in 2016 on the LMX project for a few years. This project aimed to create a high-performance and lightweight electric motorcycle bike, by abolishing all thermal constraints.

A year later, we announced the production launch of the LMX 161.

The LMX 161 has been designed for various uses. It’s perfect for off-roading but also for cross-country competition. Since 2021, it has been used in particular for the LX Cup and FIM Ex-bike Cross World Cup races.

For the more curious, discover the complete history of LMX models right here : ABOUT LMX

From adult electric motocross to 45 km/h speedbike : a common vision

This search for lightness and power is always at the heart of our projects at LMX.

The fast bike is a concept that also responds to this vision. So, since 2018 we have been developing 45 km/h approved speed bikes, manufactured in Jonage.

What’s the speed bike ?

A powerful and fast e-bike with assistance up to 45km/h. It is particularly suitable for sports practice, but also for urban travel, between home and work.

What the speed bike allows :

  • Performance comparable to thermal models.
  • Increased autonomy for ever longer bike rides.
  • Unique sensations and driving experience, halfway between a bike and a moped.
  • Real versatility in terms of practice: comfortable on the road during the week and off-road the weekend.

And you, are you more of an ultra-light electric motorcycle team or a super-powerful electric bike for your outings ?

The evolution of LMX Bikes since 2016

The evolution of LMX Bikes since 2016

In this article

It has now been more than 6 years since LMX Bikes entered the market by producing its electric two-wheelers in its own manufacturing workshop.

And we told you in our last article, 2022 is the year of surprises…

We therefore invite you to dive into the heart of the LMX workshop, which has continued to grow over the years, to discover behind the scenes of the brand since 2016.

From 2016 to 2018 : the very first LMX manufacturing workshop

6 years ago, the LMX Bikes brand was registered. Serious things can begin.

The LMX team then moved into our very first manufacturing workshop, a 150m2 room located in Frontonas, in North Isère.

The production

It was in 2017 that our first oven was handcrafted in the LMX workshop. Welding of the chassis, cabling of the regulator, installation of resistors, a real tailor-made project !

Furnace during manufacture : Frontonas, 2017

Interior of the oven : Frontonas, 2017

This oven allowed us to make the first 400 LMX frames and is still in service in our workshop in 2022. Thanks to its high-performance insulation, its heating capacity can go up to 530° with only 3 kw. But we told you, 2022 is the year of novelties…

Case to follow !

In addition to the frames, we also heat treated the steel engine gears using our own gas oven.

100% manual machining of an LMX 81 hub in 7075-T6 aluminium. More than 7 hours of lathe and milling work were necessary.

Our swingarms are made of aluminum sheet metal for better rigidity on our LMX 161s. Manufactured in-house, this is still the current design.

Swingarms and engine blocks of the first 5 LMX 81, early 2017

In-house machined LMX 81 engine blocks, 2017

First aluminum LMX 161 frames, 2017

The welding

In 2017, we started TIG welding the first series frames of the LMX 81, our first electric mountain bike. Manufactured in-house, we use a weld assembly to ensure the correct position of all the parts that make up the LMX swingarm and thus gain precision.

This assembly has since been modified and is now used for mounting LMX 64 swingarms.

2nd prototype frame of the LMX 64

The Research and Development

In addition to the production and manufacture of our electric two-wheelers, our workshop also has an in-house design office dedicated to design.

From the start, we have been carrying out all the manufacturing plans and technical studies for our models (here those of the LMX 81).

R&D (Research & Development) has been an integral part of LMX Bikes key activities since the beginning.

Here, heating tests are carried out on the batteries with the thermal camera to check the heating of the cells once assembled one by one in the final pack.

Engine equipped with liquid cooling, 2017

Test bench – battery heater tests, 2018

Test bench – engine tests, 2018

New solutions are designed and tested regularly. For example, our electric motorcycle prototypes in 2017 were already equipped with liquid cooling. This is a technology that was later abandoned to make the system more reliable by integrating a more powerful motor instead.

From the start, the search for reliability remains at the heart of our concerns.

The assembly

Within these 150 m2, we were already assembling our first motorcycles with custom-made tools : here, the assembly feet of the workshop were adapted to our vehicles and fully adjustable.

Deliveries

Since January 2018, we have been traveling the roads thanks to the first LMX truck, which brings us into direct contact with our customers and our dealers. We also travel regularly to various events (fairs, festivals, races, photo shoots, etc.).

From 2018 to 2022 : the LMX workshop moves to new premises

After spending 3 years in our first premises, we had to think bigger and support the strong growth of the brand. This is how we moved into our new 455m2 production workshop in 2018. Between design, manufacturing, assembly, marketing, preparation for dispatch, our current workshop is running at full speed !

Installation of premises, 2018

The production

The production of the frames of our LMX 64s is always carried out locally in Frontonas. Discover all the stages of the manufacturing process in our dedicated article.

In addition to frames and swingarms, we manufacture other elements of our two-wheelers, such as motorcycle batteries, thermoformed fairings, engraving of serial numbers, various wiring (manufacture of harnesses), and parts in 3D printing.

Speed Bike LMX 64
Usinage LMX

The assembly

We continue to assemble our speed bikes and electric motorcycles in our workshop on our two assembly lines : one dedicated to LMX 64 and another dedicated to LMX 161.

We produce and assemble the LMX 161 battery packs. The cells are welded using a digitally controlled welding machine developed in-house. Composed of Samsung 18650 cells, each battery alone is 2 kwh. To date, more than 300 kWh of battery have been fitted in packs since 2016.

Design Office

Finally, design and research still remain a key activity of the brand today. Our new 2022 model is currently under development thanks to a team of passionate engineers.

Here, the prototype n°1 of the engine block of the LMX 56 machined in aluminum 6061-T6.

2022 : a new chapter begins for LMX

As you will have understood, after 3 years in our first local and 3 other years in our current local, it is time for us to move up a gear !

It is in this dynamic of growth that we will move in 2022 to a brand new premises… of 841 m2 !

We tell you, this production workshop located in Jonage has industrial-scale ambitions.

Almost 6 times larger than our first local invested 6 years earlier, there is really something to announce heavy for the future !

The evolution of the LMX bikes in photos

In this article

Here we go, the year 2022 is already off to a flying start in the workshop.

We are in full development of the new LMX platform that we presented to you recently, we give you a thousand : the LMX 56 !

You may have already seen it on our Instagram (@lmx_freeride), the prototype n°1 rolls regularly on the field with the aim of being tested and improved by our teams, in order to deliver you this year the most LMX integrated into the range.

This period of new year and strong technological developments is the perfect opportunity to look back on the first steps of LMX and the evolution of our models over the years, to arrive at those that you know today.

And all in pictures please !

The genesis of the project

The project appeared between 2008 and 2011, with the creation of a first all-terrain electric bike. The first frame was not strong enough, so the pedals had to be removed first. But you already know that they quickly came back in force afterwards…

It was then between 2012 and 2013 that four LMX prototypes named P1 and P2 were born, based on the concept of an ultra-light electric motorcycle, intended for use in motocross, freeride and enduro.

In June 2014, the first six frames of this P2.1 concept bike were released as pre-production models and became the first sales of the project.

  • Features : Chromo-molly 25cd4s tig welded steel without paint

In 2015, the latest LMX P2.2 and P.2.3 frames are industrialized and manufactured in Ukraine. About forty models will leave the factory.

  • Features : Powder coated steel

It was in 2016 that LMX Bikes launched a new e-commerce site and then became a real brand.

The evolution fo the platforms

LMX 161

2017-2021

The LMX adventure began with the development of the brand’s first aluminum platform : the LMX 161.

The search for lightness and performance was the common thread that gave rise to the LMX brand name, which simply stands for Lightweight Motocross (MX).

This is how the first French 45 kg electric off-road motorcycle was born in 2017.

LMX 161H

2018 - today

The LMX 161 was then approved as a 45 km/h moped in 2018 and is therefore available in two versions : the LMX 161H and the LMX 161MX. The road and public paths are now accessible to it, which makes it even more versatile and fun to use.

Equipped with a rearview mirror, license plate holder and front lights, it is the perfect partner for weekday urban outings and weekend sporting outings.

LMX 81

2017-2018

After the development of its ultralight electric motorcycle, LMX Bikes is looking for new goals and sets out to design an ultra-efficient electric bike.

This is how the LMX 81 was born in 2017 in its manufacturing workshop.

To meet the brand’s vision of ultra-performance, it was necessary to develop a two-wheeler much more powerful than a simple VAE. The concept of the LMX 81 seemed obvious : a two-wheeler with the appearance of a freeride mountain bike with pedals and the performance of a real electric motorcycle with a thumb trigger.

“It is thanks to the double transmission technology that we were able to put our LMX back on the pedals while keeping the power acquired”
Adam
CEO

LMX 64

2018 - today

The LMX 64 has been one of the brand’s emblems since 2018. The first LMX platform equipped with a torque sensor, it is a real revolution for the brand in terms of engine.

This 45 km/h speed bike is first offered in an offroad version, the LMX 64T. Then, it passes the European L1e-B moped homologation in mid-2020 and becomes the LMX 64H in street legal version.

Both versions are available today and make the LMX 64 an ultra-versatile two-wheeler that adapts to you however you ride.

Several improvements are emerging over the months :

  • The development of a belt transmission on the pedaling side : more discreet and more practical.
  • New controller in 2020 : color display, more modes and finer management of the torque sensor, direct USB connection to the bike with a computer.
“The LMX 64 is based on the transmission of the LMX 81 but has been made more industrializable in order to arrive at a reasonable final cost for our customers by integrating the idea of a torque sensor from the start.”
Adam
CEO

Using your LMX in winter : tips and advice

Using your LMX in winter : tips and advice

Winter regularly offers beautiful sunny and clear days, perfect for going out riding on your LMX !

However, this season requires a little more care when it comes to the maintenance of your two-wheeler and the checks to be carried out before hitting the road.

In this article, find out how to adapt the maintenance of your LMX in the winter season and what to check on your equipment before going out.

Adapt the maintenance of your LMX in winter

  • Apply lubricant to the transmission chains to prevent freezing and corrosion caused by salt. Be sure to use a grease suitable for the type of terrain and climatic conditions.
  • Wash your LMX after each ride to remove any salt that could potentially be put on the roads. Avoid high pressure jets too close to sensitive elements : mechanical bearings and cassette, electronics : circuits and battery. Instead, prefer a classic water jet or medium pressure jet (such as portable pressure washers).
  • Dry your LMX well after each wash so that it does not get stored wet.
  • Your entire LMX should be stored in a dry and temperate place (between 10 ° and 30 °). Below this temperature, the battery level can be reduced by 30%. It is therefore important to store your LMX away from the wind to avoid damage caused by cold and humidity (impact on the battery and corrosion).

Special battery indications

  • Regularly charge the battery of your LMX so that it does not drain completely.
  • Store the battery in a dry and warm place so as not to damage it.

In extreme cold, if the temperature is below -15 ° C, your LMX will turn off. If the temperature is -10 ° C, the battery will reset. At these temperatures, the battery will not be able to recharge, so it is strongly recommended to store it away from the cold.

  • If you do not use your LMX during winter, we recommend that you store your battery at ⅔ of its maximum capacity (52V no-load voltage), in accordance with the user manual.
  • Have your LMX checked at the end of winter directly at the workshop or at your LMX dealer for a complete check-up and be ready for spring.

Check your equipment before leaving

  • Check the braking performance before each ride if you have not used your LMX for a long time.
  • Check the tire pressure of the LMX as it can decrease with the cold.
  • Check the chains of both transmissions or the chain and belt for belt drives.
  • Check the hubs.
  • Check the headset.

Cover yourself in the cold as a pilot

  • Multiply the thin layers of clothing to keep your body warm.
  • Prefer warm, waterproof clothing to protect yourself from humidity.
  • Keep your hands warm with waterproof gloves and liner gloves.
  • Wear waterproof, warm and snow-resistant shoes so you don’t end up with wet feet when you go out.

Adapt your LMX to the terrain

  • Lower your tire pressure if you are riding in snow. This will give you better grip.
  • Leave with a full, warm battery. Indeed, it risks discharging faster in the cold of winter.
  • Opt for sporting outings which will keep the battery warm to optimize the autonomy of your LMX.

Your LMX in winter

There you go, you are now ready to hit the road with your LMX and enjoy the winter landscapes of your region.

What size of wheel for my practice ? Explanations and advice

What size of wheel for my practice ? Explanations and advice

Like any pilot, you have maybe already asked yourself these questions :

What are the most common wheel sizes ? What are their characteristics ? Which wheel size should I choose ? Which LMX configuration is best for my practice ?

We have answered all of your wheel questions in this article to help you find the LMX that’s right for you !

Motocross électrique adulte LMX 161

1. The most common MTB wheel sizes : 27.5" and 29"

Let’s start with the basics : Wheel sizes are expressed in inches as a unit of measurement. Historically, ATVs were equipped with 26″ wheels.

There were not really any other sizes of wheels suitable for individual practices. It was cross country that brought the 29” wheels to the market to provide better grip on the ground.

The 27.5″ wheels then appeared to offer greater versatility and to offer a compromise between 26″ and 29″.

2. Advantages of 27.5'" and 29" wheels

27.5'' WHEELS

More manageable

As the 27.5’’ wheels are smaller, they provide more handling and agility, which makes the ride more straightforward and precise.

Smaller people are more comfortable with these kinds of wheels because they have less difficulty turning in narrow passages.

Lighter

The 27.5″ wheels are logically lighter than larger wheels even though the weight difference decreases.

More acceleration

The 27.5″ wheels provide greater acceleration than larger wheels. Indeed, it is necessary to give more pedal strokes to train the wheels, but it is easier to gain speed thanks to less inertia.

More versatile for less effort

If you practice on all terrains and are looking for versatility, prefer a 27.5″ wheel. Plus, it takes less effort to move forward than a 29″ wheel, especially on unobstructed terrain.

29'' WHEELS

Fewer pedal turns

As seen with the 27.5” wheels, the smaller the wheels, the more pedal turns must be provided. Conversely, with a larger 29” wheel, you cover more distance with the same number of pedal revolutions. On the other hand, the acceleration is less important.

Optimized ground grip

Since the contact patch is higher on a larger wheel, it is best to go 29″ if you are riding on rough terrain. The angle of attack is different, it is weaker and lower, so it will allow you to overcome obstacles more easily.

More flexible and comfortable

As the wheel sizes are larger, the vehicle is smoother, more comfortable, but less responsive when cornering. Your two-wheeler is then more stable.

More yield

Riding with 29” wheels reduces friction on the ground, and therefore offers more performance. Driving performance is therefore optimized.

3. Which LMX configuration best suits my practice ?

The three existing LMX platforms each have their own specificities in terms of wheel mounting.

Let’s go back to their different equipment to determine which one is best suited to your practice.

LMX 64, enduro style equipment

The LMX 64’s front and rear wheels are 27.5″, which corresponds to an enduro-style setup.

A true all-rounder, the LMX 64 adapts to all sizes of riders and can go on all terrains.

Comfortable downhill and uphill, you can overcome all obstacles thanks to the accelerator on the handlebars.

Rear wheel

Rim 30 mm x 27.5''

Front wheel

Rim 30 mm x 27.5''

LMX 161, motocross-style equipment

The 26″ front and 19″ rear wheels are a cross-country setup for our ultralight electric motorcycle.

Indeed, having a larger wheel at the front makes it easier to overcome obstacles.

Rear wheel

Rim 1.4 x 19''

Front wheel

Rim 2.50 x 26''

LMX 56, trial-type equipment

The 29″ front and 27.5″ rear wheels are a typical trial setup. Indeed, having a bigger wheel at the front will make it easier to pass obstacles and have better stability during technical passages.

If you hesitate between the LMX 64 and the LMX 56, it is at the level of your practice that you will have to turn to make your decision.

The LMX 161 MX evolves and becomes the LMX 161 MXR !

The LMX 161 MX evolves and becomes the LMX 161 MXR !

On the LMX side, up to now we have offered the LMX 161H, our 45 km/h road-approved motorcycle, and the LMX 161 MX, our non-approved offroad version including all off-road equipment.

We have been working on improving this second version for a few months.

And that’s it, we officially communicate on the replacement of the LMX 161 MX : the LMX 161 MXR ! With an R for Racing, this new version breaks all records in terms of performance in LMX vehicles.

WHAT MAKES THE LMX 161 MXR UNIQUE

FASTER

The LMX 161 MXR is not approved for the road and can therefore use all its engine capacities, without restraint. So it's not at 45 km/h like on the LMX 161H, but at 70 km/h that you can drive on private roads !

A SPECIAL RACING LOOK

To match with the Suntour RUX fork and give this version a racing look, the fairings of the LMX 161 MXR machined in our workshop are white. A real differentiator in our range !

MORE POWERFUL

Thanks to the new controller and a higher speed of rotation, the peak power of the motor is multiplied and goes from 6 kW for the LMX 161H to 9 kW for the LMX 161 MXR. A real powerhouse for all your sports outings !

MORE FLEXIBLE

Thanks to the feedback from our customers, we noticed that the original LMX 161 MX had a bit too much “on / off” response in the field and that the switching between the two modes was not smooth enough. The old controller was then replaced by the one present on the LMX 64. The latter being more advanced, the power in the technique is then much better exploited during your outings.

ALL-TERRAIN DEDICATED EQUIPMENT

FORK: SR Suntour RUX double T (38mm diameter and 200mm travel) SHOCK ABSORBER: DNM RCP2 (215 mm travel). BRAKES: Formula Cura 4 with 4 x 18mm front / rear pistons and shorter levers, more aggressive on the ground. Automatic chain tensioner. Its spring mounting really limits the risk of chain derailment.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND ON ALL YOUR LMX 161

Two driving modes

The two driving modes are still present on this version, with an ECO mode and a BOOST mode. They offer you real versatility during your outings and real offroad sensations on the ground.

And still so light !

At only 45 kg, it is twice as light as its thermal equivalent. Ideal for all your outings, whether leisure or sports. But you have just seen it, the LMX 161 MXR is nonetheless a true concentrate of power and aggressiveness !

Actively participating in the realization of LMXs, from the start of manufacturing to the end of assembly, while discovering new techniques every day, are all elements that stimulate her on a daily basis.

Mattis has been on an apprenticeship for almost two years with our team and is working on the very first stages of the LMX manufacturing process : the manual manufacturing of LMX 64 frames.

It is he who comes to trace and bend the aluminum sheets, cut and assemble the tubes to form the frames and prepare them for the welding stage.

After the heat treatment of the latter, Mattis still carries out several finishing operations, such as threading the bottom bracket. Starting from simple aluminum tubes and sheets to create a finished and resistant frame, this is what drives Mattis every day.

We hope you enjoyed this article and that you got to know the LMX team better, through these different portraits.

Each person has their own personality, but the pursuit of excellence and the passion for the profession are all things that bring us all together and that makes what LMX Bikes is today.

Focus on … the dangers of unlocking pedelecs

Focus on ... the dangers of unlocking pedelecs

Since Electrically Assisted Bicycles (eBikes) have become available in the market, many consumers are tempted to unleash them for access to more power and greater speed. Indeed, VAE are considered cycles as long as the assistance does not exceed 25 km/h and 250W of power. However, the 25 km/h being quickly reached and sometimes even without the help of the assistance, some users no longer find their account in these bikes and their capacity of assistance limited. This is where the urge to go wild can arise.

An increasing risk of legal sanctions

The penalties that apply to unbridled eBikes used on public roads are heavy, because riding an eBike that does not meet certain technical requirements is equivalent to riding an unapproved moped. In the eyes of the law, a moped must be declared with a gray card, registered with a plate and insured. Fines can go up to € 1,500 for driving without insurance.

As the pedelec market has been booming for several years, the authorities are increasingly faced with unbridled bicycles and are therefore increasingly alert on this subject.

Numerous technical constraints

In addition to legal risks, jailbreaking exposes users of pedelecs to great dangers in terms of security and warranty. The vehicle may experience engine overheating and therefore a drop in performance, as its level of use is beyond its rated capabilities. In addition, a modified engine is no longer under the manufacturer’s warranty, who is no longer responsible for the safety or performance of the engine. Some engine manufacturers even use complete engine blocking systems if a choke system is detected. Finally, the braking performance of the eBike can be impaired, in addition to the premature wear of certain parts, which increases the risk of accidents for the user. And beware, insurance does not cover an accident with a modified vehicle! This implies, in the event of a serious accident, the medical and legal costs payable by the user of an unbridled eBike …

Outings without constraints with your approved LMX

From the start, one of LMX’s missions was to offer approved AND powerful vehicles, in response to the limitations present on conventional pedelecs. Since 2020, your LMX 161 and LMX 64 have both been approved for 50cc mopeds (L1e-B), with assistance allowing you to reach 45 km/h. No need to search anymore, great sensations are available to you, without constraints !

The strengths of homologation

Riding with an approved vehicle and taking the paths authorized for it is the guarantee of respecting the rules in force and therefore of driving without constraints, enjoying 100% of the present moment. And with your insurance, it is also the serenity of being assured in the event of an accident. It is also the guarantee of driving a vehicle adapted to the speed and power required, without the risk of premature wear of parts. Finally, approved vehicles are eligible for government purchasing aid, which is always financially welcome. In fact, you have to justify a registration certificate and an approval certificate to be eligible.

Focus on … the patented LMX double transmission

Focus on ... the patented LMX double transmission

Innovation at the heart of LMX technology

All your LMX 64s are equipped with a unique technology on the market, patented and validated by LMX since 2017 : a double freewheel transmission at the rear wheel.

We explain everything to you today, in this zoom dedicated to this very special technology. First of all, this dual transmission is part of one of the unique characteristics of your LMX 64, which in itself is a small concentrate of technology.

Discover just here our article on the double assist that we published recently, to become unbeatable on the LMX 64 !

How does this double transmission work ?

To begin with, it is necessary to define what a double transmission means. As the name suggests, a transmission is a technology whose purpose is to transmit the power of pedaling.

On your LMX 64, the transmission is made up of a hub, a cassette, 2 freewheels and … two independent transmissions ! A chain for pedaling and a chain for the motor. The chain on the pedaling side can even be a transmission belt, this is an evolution that we have been offering you for a few months.

If you want to know more about the difference between chain and drive belt, click the button below to read our article about it.

The advantages of dual transmission

To understand the purpose of this transmission, one must first know the context. The LMX 64 are speed bikes approved to go up to 45 km / h, with 2000 W continuous motors, and up to 2500 W peak.

In off-road use, the power delivered by the engine and the stresses applied to the transmission can cause a risk of chain breakage, and premature wear of the cassette if a conventional transmission is used. LMX therefore imagined an innovative double freewheel transmission provided by two independent chains.

The advantages of this transmission are numerous :

  • The use of two independent chains prevents wear and therefore the potential breakage of the pedaling chain.
  • There is total independence between bicycle modes and motorized modes.
  • Regardless of the pedaling gear engaged, the maximum engine torque is reached. Indeed, on classic e-bikes, the torque depends on the engaged pedaling ratio, which is not the case on LMXs because they are completely independent.

Maintaining your transmission

Here are some tips on how to best maintain the transmission of your LMX. First, you need to wash your transmission after every messy ride. Then comes the lubrication.

You must absolutely turn to specific greases so as not to deteriorate the equipment with foreign residues.

So use a “dry” and non-sticky product such as Muc-Off Nano Tech (Motorcycle Cleaner) or Muc-Off Dry Chain Lube (Motorcycle). A first cleaning phase can be carried out using a penetrating product such as WD40.

Care should be taken not to get any on the discs as there is a risk of contamination of the pads. Once this is done, the chain should be wiped with a cloth.

The places to lubricate regularly on your vehicle are as follows :

  • Chain tensioner
  • The derailleur rollers
  • The two chains

Warning: a belt transmission does not lubricate !

The frequency of lubrication therefore depends on the type of terrain on which you are riding and the conditions of use. For all the information on the routine maintenance of your LMX, do not hesitate to consult our article on the subject.

Focus on… double LMX assistance

LMX Speed Bikes

Focus on... double LMX assistance
Innovation at the service of versatility

LMX Speed Bikes

A desire for innovation and an assumed bias

Why a dual assistance ?

First of all, why talk about dual assistance ?

Unlike conventional VAEs which only have one electrical assistance via a torque or cadence sensor, the LMX 64s offer a second assistance: an accelerator on the handlebars. Like on a motorcycle !

Over the modes, the two assistances can be independent and combine according to what suits them best. This dual assistance is a technology at the heart of the LMX philosophy. Indeed, one of our missions is to place innovation at the service of versatility and sporting pleasure. Electric assistance is not a “lazy” or “pseudo-sports” solution, no ! It’s a real way to surpass yourself and have fun in a different way.

With the ultra-versatile LMX 64, there’s something for everyone:

  • For those who love cycling but want to surpass themselves in terms of sensations.
  • For those who come from the enduro and who want a light vehicle, easy to handle and without constraints, while rediscovering the sensations of the motorcycle.
  • For those who are passionate about innovation and design.

A unique innovation on the market

A bike approved for 45 km/h with an accelerator handle on the handlebars and a torque sensor ? Designed and manufactured in France by freeride two-wheeler enthusiasts ?

You only find this at LMX Bikes !

This is a unique innovation of which we are proud and which is as close to our hearts as our double transmission. The LMX 64 proves to be a true concentrate of technology.

Speed Bikes

The pedaling torque sensor

How it works ?

This first electric assistance is the one you will most commonly find on classic VAEs. This is a sensor located at the level of the pedals which will determine the speed of rotation of the pedals as well as the torque provided by the pilot.

The assistance power is then proportional to the effort you put into pedaling and to the assistance mode chosen on the LMX, for an extremely natural and responsive feeling. Of the 5 modes available on the LMX, the torque sensor is active on the first 4 modes.

In mode 1, 2 and 3, you only have access to this assistance mode. It is he who will help you overcome all obstacles by increasing your physical effort.
From mode 4, the accelerator on the handlebars becomes active, in addition to the sensor which is always present. This is the most versatile and fun mode !

The accelerator on the handlebars

How it works ?

The throttle on the handlebars is the second assistance system of the LMX 64. This is where the added value of the vehicle lies. It is a rotating handle located at the handlebars which serves as an accelerator, just like on a moped or a motorcycle !

The power delivered is then proportional to the user setpoint and to the assistance mode chosen on the LMX. Just turn the handle for an immediate response and enjoy the full power of your vehicle, without having to pedal.

This accelerator is available on modes 4 and 5 of the LMX, to make you benefit from all the power of the engine!

During enduro and all-terrain outings, the accelerator on the handlebars allows you to step on the gas at any time to overcome an obstacle or go back uphill even in situations where you cannot pedal. A real stroke of genius for all enduro fans who want to rediscover the sensations of motorcycling while pedaling on a sporty vehicle with a real power reserve.

LMX 64 frames : French manufacturing and handmade

LMX 64 frames : French manufacturing and handmade

Speed Bike LMX atelier

Today we are going to talk about one of LMX’s greatest pride: the local manufacture of frames for our speed bikes. All the steps used to design these frames are done as much as possible at our workshop or in partnership with companies in the region. Indeed, the LMX 64 frames are designed, manufactured, welded and assembled in Isère, in the heart of France.

This control of the entire manufacturing process is essential to distill our know-how and expertise in our LMXs.

The frame being an essential element of the speed bike, it was very important for us to design it according to our own specificities in order to integrate the engine as well as possible and to ensure consistency between constraints and technical ambitions. All the critical stages in the manufacture of our frames are tracked by individual quality sheets, which will follow our frames and swingarms throughout their lifecycle.

Why aluminium ?

The answer to this question is part of the core philosophy of LMX Bikes. Indeed, we want to offer high quality, resistant and durable bikes. Our frames are made of 6061-T6 aluminum. It is a material used, among other things, in aeronautics.

One of the main advantages of this aluminum is its high resistance to corrosion, stress and fatigue. LMXs can therefore withstand drops and withstand shocks.

Aluminum is also an infinitely recyclable material, unlike carbon. In addition to lasting a very long time, LMX frames can be recycled at the end of your vehicle’s life. This is a significant point in the choice of materials because we want as much as possible to combine pleasure with responsibility.

The manufacturing process

1. Design and manufacture

The prototype design of machined parts and tubes is done in-house according to the design specifications. The tubes and machined parts are then made to measure by subcontracting after an in-house prototype phase.

At the same time, the sheets are cut in Meyzieu (1) to then be sent to our workshop in Frontonas (1). These parts are then heated to make them malleable, then cold folded in our workshop to give them their final shape before the welding phase.

2. Welding

All parts of the frame are entrusted to an independent welder, specializing in welding aluminum. Its expertise and know-how guarantee quality work and therefore robust frameworks. Indeed, aluminum welding is a complex technique requiring an alternating voltage and a special manual procedure.

After the frames are welded, a visual inspection of all welds is performed before proceeding to the heat treatment stage.

3. Heat treatment

Then comes the heat treatment step, which is also carried out in our workshop. This is a decisive step in the manufacturing process because it gives aluminum its ultimate strength. The frames, after being welded, are heated in an oven at 520°C for one hour and then immersed in water, this is the quenching step or T4. This will be used to normalize the internal stresses after welding. It is also after this step that the alignment of the frames is checked and corrected on a specific assembly.

They are then heated a second time at 190°C for 2 hours to reach maximum resistance. At this stage, called T6, the frames become so tough that they cannot be corrected for faults. The advantage of aluminum is that a defective frame can be recycled and therefore is not a loss in itself.

Some manipulations are still done by hand on these frames such as the threads or the bore of the seat tube. Performing these operations last ensures that these surfaces will no longer move in order to have the best possible precision.

4. Preparation for painting

Finally, our workshop technicians will sand and manually clean the frames to prepare them for painting or anodizing. They need to be clean and free of grease to proceed to the last step.

5. Paint or anodizing finish

For the final touch, the frames can be treated in different places depending on the expected finishes:

First, we offer a powder coating paint coating. This extremely strong paint is applied in two coats with an oven pass for each coat. For this, we send executives to a specialized company in Saint Marcellin (2).

For limited or luxury editions of our bikes, we offer a gray or champagne anodization treatment. This step is carried out by a company based in Annecy (3).

What's a speedbike? - Definition

But then, what exactly is a speedbike?

The speedbike is a two-wheeled electric bike that is faster and more powerful than traditional e-bikes. Unlike the latter, the speedbike falls into the category of 50 cc mopeds. Indeed, a speedbike can go up to 45 km/h at the motor assistance level, compared to 25 km/h for traditional e-bikes. The motor power is also not limited to 250W. For example, the LMX 56 can go up to 2500W.

Why choose a speed bike rather than an e-bike?

Speed bike: lighter than a scooter or moped

If you take the LMX 56 and its featherweight of 30 kg, a speedbike is 3 to 5 times lighter than a classic moped.

The handling is then made easy and accessible to all and its handling allows you to find the driving sensations and speed of an enduro mountain bike, while developing the performance of an electric motorcycle.

Accessible to all

The speedbike is part of the 50cc mopeds category (L1e-B). Thus,
no license is required, just the BSR which is accessible from the age of 14.

In addition, the speedbike is easy to transport because it can be quickly loaded onto a bike rack (no need for a trailer).

Discreet and silent

The absence of engine noise and vibrations allows you to concentrate on trajectories, improvisation and fun, without disturbing the neighborhood.

Goodbye to noise pollution and carbon emissions.

No more frustration at 25 km/h

Now you can have fun up to 45 km/h. On the LMX 56, the 2500W of peak engine power is a treat.

LMX TIP: The LMX 56 has double electric assistance because it has a rotating handlebar grip. Ideal for making the most of all its power.

Limited maintenance compared to a scooter

Maintenance is made easy, simple and limited (washing, greasing, and tires). It is similar to that of a classic VAE. The operating costs are therefore reduced.

Practice in urban environment

Easy to transport and park, the speedbike is perfect for getting around town efficiently, while having fun. It is safer than a simple bike on a road because there is almost no speed difference with cars. Exposure to danger is then reduced. It is also less bulky than a scooter. It is also perfect for having fun on weekends off-road.

Speed bike legislation in France

The speed bike falls into the L1e-B moped category (scooters, mopeds, and other mopeds under 50 cc).

Here are the essential points to respect when using a speed bike:

  • Take out civil liability insurance.
  • Wear a moped-approved helmet. A simple bicycle helmet is not allowed.
  • Wear moped-approved gloves.
  • The speedbike is accessible from the age of 14 and requires an AM license (formerly the BSR).
  • The speedbike must have a registration document and a registration plate.
  • With a speedbike, you cannot use cycle paths and “green” tracks unless otherwise indicated (mopeds authorized).
  • A few parts are also necessary on the LMX in addition to the plate (mirror, rear brake light, front lighting, kickstand, horn and reflectors).
